Teething

Signs of teething, safe relief, and caring for your baby's first teeth.

1. Common signs of teething

  • Drooling, chewing fists or toys, flushed cheeks, and swollen gums.
  • Some babies are fussier than usual, sleep poorly, or refuse feeds briefly.
  • A slight temperature is possible, but a high fever is not caused by teething — seek medical advice.

2. Safe ways to soothe gums

  • Offer a clean teething ring cooled in the fridge (not frozen) for baby to chew on.
  • Gently rub your baby's gums with a clean finger or a soft, damp muslin cloth.
  • For older babies, a chilled soft food like yogurt or apple puree can be soothing.

3. Teething myths and medicines

  • Amber necklaces and bracelets are not safe — they are choking and strangulation risks.
  • Teething gels containing lidocaine or benzocaine are not recommended for young babies.
  • If pain relief is needed, speak with your pharmacist or GP about age-appropriate options.

4. Caring for first teeth

  • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, using a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use a soft baby toothbrush and brush twice a day, especially before bed.
  • Register your baby with a dentist and take them for a check-up by their first birthday.

When in doubt, ask a professional
