Diapering & Hygiene

Nappy changes, preventing rash, bathing, and keeping baby clean and comfortable.

1. How often to change

  • Newborns need changing every 2–3 hours and after every poo.
  • Disposable nappies can usually go slightly longer overnight, but check for leaks.
  • Cloth nappies need more frequent changes, roughly every 2 hours.

2. Nappy rash prevention

  • Change wet or dirty nappies promptly to reduce skin exposure to moisture.
  • Pat skin dry and apply a thin barrier cream if redness appears.
  • Give baby some nappy-free time on a towel each day to let skin air.
  • See a doctor if a rash is severe, blistering, or not improving after a few days.

3. Bathing basics

  • Newborns only need a bath 2–3 times a week; top-and-tail washes work on other days.
  • Use warm water (around 37–38°C / 98–100°F) and test with your elbow or wrist.
  • Never leave baby unattended in water — even for a few seconds.
  • Use mild, fragrance-free baby wash and keep bath time short.
